Island Law: Safety at home and on the road

I am Deputy George Bradbury. I work for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. I am a resident of Harpswell. I live and work among you.

Your monthly warning

The fine for operator possessing or consuming alcohol in a motor vehicle in a public way is $180. Operating under the influence is a misdemeanor with a minimum fine of $500. The fine is set by a judge.

Time for a checkup

We are entering the last month of the year! This means the temperatures are falling and storms could bring ice or snow. As the weather grows colder, it may be wise to have your vehicle looked over. The cold takes a toll on car batteries. It is also a good idea to have snow tires.

During the winter, make sure you leave with plenty of time to get where you’re going. Drive with caution; don’t be reckless. If you tailgate, you’ll be more at risk for an accident. The cold means puddles may freeze over. Early morning frost can lead to early morning accidents.

‘Tis the season — of fraud

The holiday season brings a higher risk of fraud, fraud and more fraud. People should not be calling you to fix your computer online or over the phone. If someone wants you to pay your bills with a gift card, that is fraud. Do not give anyone your personal or financial information over the internet.

New Year’s fireworks

The town of Harpswell has a fireworks ordinance, available on the town website at harpswell.maine.gov. You can have a fireworks display on New Year’s Eve, but check the ordinance and follow the rules.

Merry Christmas! Happy New Year! Remember, let’s be safe out there! And don’t get voted off the islands.

The views above are those of Deputy George Bradbury, not of the town of Harpswell or the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

My wife and I are in a dressing room at Macy's. I am wearing a mint green shirt covered with paddleboards. "You think I can wear this to work?" "Paddleboards are cool," Ally says. "And you can wear this untucked with a navy blue T-shirt underneath."

Harpswell Naturalist: Power dynamics

The birds kept coming, swarming in numbers I had never seen, flitting around in search of food. It was so intense that I could not maintain an accurate count of the visitors for my reporting to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology via the eBird app. Having just filled the feeders that morning, it was clear that I would soon be refilling them.

It was easy to close on my target because the road in Georgetown was lined with vehicles. I arrived before noon on Jan. 2 to find the lawn packed with at least 60 people bundled up against a cold mist.
