Island Law: Look out for school buses

I am Deputy George Bradbury. I work for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. I am a resident of Harpswell. I live and work among you.

Your monthly warning

It is an arrestable offense for a vehicle to pass a stopped school bus with its lights flashing. A bicyclist who passes a school bus with its lights flashing must pay a $152 fine.

Back to school

The summer season has come to an end and all the summer memories have been made, which can only mean one thing: Back-to-school season has begun! Please be sure to leave your house with plenty of time to get to school or work, or to run your errands in town. Remember that at almost every town road, there could be one to 10 children waiting for the bus.

Keep your eyes open for school buses. When you see yellow lights, that means caution. Red lights mean stop. As stated above, there is no fine for passing a school bus with flashing lights — it is an arrestable offense.

Fall also is a great time to take up hiking, and Harpswell has the most beautiful trails. Stop by the Town Office to pick up a brochure!

Remember, let’s be safe out there! And don’t get voted off the islands.

There are whitecap rollers in the bay and I'm loving Maine being Maine. But, for some reason, today's weather makes me think of a time long ago when Maine weather taught me a life lesson that I'll share with you.
