Select Board approves new leash rule for Cliff Trail

Starting Sept. 1, dogs must be leashed at all times on the accessible portion of Harpswell’s Cliff Trail. The town Select Board voted unanimously on Aug. 7 to adopt the rule, which applies to the trail segment built in 2021 along Strawberry Creek.

The nearly half-mile segment was designed to provide an inclusive recreation opportunity for those with limited mobility. It features benches, picnic tables and a view of a small cascade at its end.

Leash requirements for the rest of Cliff Trail remain the same: Dogs must be leashed between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. each day, but may be off-leash under owner control at other times.

The new rule is meant to address community concerns about accessibility and safety, town officials said. More information about leash requirements on Cliff Trail is available at harpswell.maine.gov.
