The Chief Medical Examiner’s Office has yet to formally identify the man, according to a statement from the Fire Marshal’s Office.

Local firefighters put out the fire on Sea Mist Lane in the overnight hours of Saturday to Sunday, March 8 to 9, according to the statement. The building was believed to be a seasonal residence “and no occupants were initially located,” it said.

Fire Marshal’s Office investigators “conducted an extensive scene examination to determine the fire’s origin and cause,” according to the statement. “During their investigation, they discovered a deceased male inside the structure.”

“Due to the extent of the damage, the fire is currently classified as undetermined,” the agency said. “The investigation remains ongoing.”

Harpswell Fire Administrator Michael Drake and Orr’s and Bailey Islands Fire Chief Benjamin Wallace Jr. referred inquiries to the Fire Marshal’s Office.
