Lynn Kilchenstein, a Cundy’s Harbor resident with a background as a leader in higher education and the arts, has joined the board of Harpswell News, the nonprofit publisher of the Harpswell Anchor.
Kilchenstein grew up in Delaware and worked on her high school, college and local newspapers in Delaware, Virginia and Maryland.
Beginning teaching as a graduate assistant at the University of Texas at El Paso, she went on to teach writing and literature at the community college level in Maryland and New Hampshire. She also served in many administrative positions, notably as president of NHTI, Concord’s Community College.
She chaired the Capitol Center for the Arts board, co-chaired the Slightly North of Boston Film Festival, served on the founding board of Red River Theatres, was vice president of the Executive Board of the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, and co-chaired the Sycamore Community Garden.
She currently volunteers as a tutor for Midcoast Literacy, a note writer for Harpswell Aging at Home, and a board member for the Cundy’s Harbor Library.
Her degrees include a bachelor’s in English from Bridgewater College in Virginia and a Master of Arts from the University of Texas at El Paso. She studied for a doctorate in literature at the University of New Hampshire.
Kilchenstein and her family moved to New Hampshire in 1986; in 1998, they discovered Harpswell and have spent time there year-round ever since. In 2019, she and her husband decided to sell their New Hampshire tree farm and make their Harpswell cottage their residence.
Their home is often filled with their son and his family, including their daughter-in-law, 3-year-old grandson, and a Great Dane-mastiff rescue dog, as well as many siblings, nieces, nephews and friends.
“The Anchor is important to me and my family,” Kilchenstein said. “We believe that factual, clearly written news shared with the community is essential to helping everyone live and participate meaningfully in a democracy, whether in the voting booth, at a Town Meeting, or in the many other ways each of us chooses to participate in our town. The Anchor is doing a wonderful job of shining the light on the daily activities and decisions that impact everyone.”
