Island Law: A New Year’s checklist

I am Deputy George Bradbury. I work for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. I am a resident of Harpswell. I live and work among you.

This month’s words are “It’s a new year.” Let’s start off on the right foot.

Make sure your vehicles are registered and inspected. Make sure you have your insurance card in your vehicles. Make sure your vehicles are safe.

If you forgot to check your smoke detector at the end of October, do it now and add new batteries.

I personally do not make New Year’s resolutions. They never work for me. I treat every day like New Year’s and work on being better than I was the day before!

Question from a reader

Reader: My son and I are at odds over a sign frequently seen on the highway. The sign reads, “Stay right unless to pass.” First of all, can we put those words in bold print, please? And secondly, is that also the rule when a single-lane road becomes a double-lane road for a short time to allow traffic to pass slower-moving vehicles? Is it the law that slower vehicles are required to move to the right and allow cars to pass on the left?

Island Law: We do not have any double-lane roads in Harpswell, but this is a good question. Slower vehicles must move to the right to let other vehicles go by. The fine for failure to keep a slow-moving vehicle to the right is $154.

Snow violations

Remember these fines as you clear your driveways and vehicles this winter. The fine for placing snow or slush on a public way is $205 — private plow operators take notice. The fine for not taking reasonable measures to prevent snow or ice from falling off your vehicle is $85. Clean snow and ice off of your vehicles!

Next month, I’ll write about enjoying the winter months.

If you would like to suggest a subject, please email me at bradbury@cumberlandcounty.org. I have received many suggestions. Please be patient and you may see yours in a future column.

Remember, let’s be safe out there! And don’t get voted off the islands.

Cooking at 43° North: Winter memories

It's the holiday season and maybe it's me, but I'm just not feeling it this year like I usually do. In my heart I know it's the lack of snowfall. When I was young, storms would dump copious amounts of snow in December. We would go downtown and see store windows decorated for the season. The streets were lined with lights and garland that ended at a large tree covered in snow that glittered with colorful lights. It was simply glorious.

Thinking in Public: Anticipation

It's chilly, 24 degrees with a 20-mph northwest breeze. For dramatic effect, I'd tell you what the "wind chill" factor is, but you and I don't need any more drama. Just figure it's 24 degrees and blowy.
