Santa Fund helps neighbors year-round

Reinvigorated with the addition of new board members and a new treasurer, the Harpswell Santa Fund is actively helping neighbors year-round.

Fundraising activities are underway. Christmas in July, at Pammy’s Ice Cream Parlor on July 7, promises to be a fun family event with a raffle of locally made items and lobster. Free ice cream and gifts for children will accompany a visit from Santa on his summer vacation.

In a partnership with the Mid Coast Hunger Prevention Program, the Santa Fund now supplies the food pantry at the Town Office with cleaning products and personal care supplies. “These items are intended for anyone in the town who finds themselves in need, no questions asked,” said Elizabeth Davis, a new board member at the Santa Fund. The self-serve food pantry is open during Town Office hours.

Evan Weston, board president these past 10 years, has worked hard to keep the Santa Fund at a healthy level to ensure a speedy response to those in need. Applications for assistance will be available both at the Town Office and online at the Santa Fund’s redesigned website, harpswellsanta.org.

Begun more than 30 years ago, this registered nonprofit has grown into a townwide, year-round opportunity for neighbors to help neighbors by ensuring homes are warm and those coping with tragic loss receive tangible reminders that we are a caring community.

“Do you want to help but you’re not sure how? Make a donation to the fund or join as a volunteer,” said Mark Roesler, the Santa Fund’s new treasurer. Many small donations make a big difference.

In 2023, the Santa Fund helped more than 116 children with gifts of warm clothing and toys at the holidays. In addition, fuel assistance and Hannaford food cards can help in a pinch.  Call Linda Roesler, fund secretary, at 631-831-8037 for more information about how to apply for assistance.

Community volunteer liaisons Mary Coombs (207-417-5102) and Pam Douglas (207-751-7870) also can assist with applications. You can reach them at harpswellsantafund2019@gmail.com.
