I oppose this idea of a large boat launch, with all that goes with it, at Mitchell Field.
The recent disclosure that this could cost the town and its taxpayers more than $1.9 million seals it for me — not that I thought this was a good idea in the first place. The fact that there will need to be a large parking lot for the large trucks and trailers and a huge, paved turnaround will change the entire character of the area.
I’ve tried to find the percentage of people who own recreational boats in Harpswell without success, but common sense tells me that 10% would be on the high side. For all the town’s taxpayers to be footing this bill so a few can go out and joyride in their boats seems unfair and wasteful. There is some wealth in this town, but there are also a large number of retirees and working people who don’t have boats and have to diligently watch their expenses. I’m fairly certain that many of them do not want to subsidize those who can afford boat ownership, along with the large pickup trucks and trailers that go with it.
There are also environmental concerns, along with the increased traffic on our roads.
If the town needs to spend millions on something at Mitchell Field, let us consider a community building for all residents, better beach access and public restrooms.
