In Maine’s presidential primary on Super Tuesday, March 5, Harpswell voters joined their counterparts across the state in backing the front-runners for both major parties — President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination and former President Donald Trump for the Republicans.

Trump received 432 votes to 245 for Nikki Haley, former ambassador to the United Nations and governor of South Carolina. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis garnered 17 votes, while Ohio entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and Texas businessman Ryan Binkley collected two each, according to unofficial results from the town clerk. DeSantis, Ramaswamy and Binkley have dropped out of the race, but were still on the Maine ballot.

Biden received 542 votes to 38 for U.S. Rep. Dean Phillips, of Minnesota, the only other candidate on the Democratic ballot in Maine.

A total of 1,327 Harpswellians cast ballots, making up 29.5% of the town’s 4,491 registered voters.

Statewide, Trump had received 72.6% of votes to 25.7% for Haley as of 10:57 p.m., according to the Bangor Daily News. Biden had support from 92.3% of Democratic primary voters, to 6.9% for Phillips.

Sixteen states held primaries on Super Tuesday, with Biden and Trump dominating. Haley upset Trump in Vermont to win her first state, the Associated Press reported. She also won the District of Columbia’s primary on Sunday, March 3.
