Raise fines for speeding

Accounts regarding speeding on Harpswell roads seem more and more prevalent. I noticed in the November issue an article about speeding near (and on?) the bridge over Gurnet Strait. While certainly unsafe, speeding in this area approaches crazy decision-making on the part of drivers.

I have heard about speeding on Peabody Road, which is a narrow road used by young children, joggers, walkers and animals. In another article in the November issue, there was mention of speeders on Allen Point Road. I’m sure that other Harpswell roads have this same problem.

Along Peabody Road, speed bumps and signs have not had much impact on reducing speeding. The deputy sheriffs who patrol Harpswell are insufficient in number to affect this problem.

My suggestion is to raise fines for speeding. Currently the fine for going 1-9 mph over the speed limit is $114. I suggest that this be upped to $150 or $175. Going 10 mph over the limit is a $129 fine. I suggest that this be $200.
