FROM REGION 10 TECHNICAL HIGH SCHOOL

Each year, the staff of Region 10 Technical High School votes on the recipient of its Citizen of the Year recognition. This year, the staff unanimously chose Orr’s Island resident Barry Stewart.

Two and a half years ago, Region 10 welcomed Jean Palmer-Smith as its creative digital media instructor. The program required change, and Palmer-Smith not only created a new curriculum, but also constructed a welcoming and professional environment.

Stewart, Palmer-Smith’s father, led a transformation of the creative digital media space. Volunteering his time and skills, he redesigned the interior of the classroom and built workbenches, desks, window frames, student workstations, bookcases and shelves. Stewart has painted, resurfaced and installed cabinets, impacting opportunities for students and providing an inviting atmosphere.

Stewart has extended his interests to other programs and students by bringing in his Model T Ford. He introduced the mechanics to all interested students and gave students and staff rides around the school.

Region 10 considers itself lucky to have had a relationship with Stewart, and its students have been the benefactors. People like Stewart make Region 10 a wonderful community to live and teach in. It is with great respect and appreciation that the staff of Region 10 Technical High School bestows this honor on Stewart.
