Town, plowing contractor agree to 3-year contract

R.A. Webber & Sons Inc., of Cundy’s Harbor, will remain Harpswell’s snowplowing contractor through at least the spring of 2026.

The Harpswell Select Board approved a new three-year deal with the business on Thursday, July 6. R.A. Webber has done the job for the previous three winters. The contract includes plowing and sanding of all public roads, as well as numerous parking lots, bus turnarounds and dry hydrants.

For the winter of 2023-24, the town will pay the same amount as in 2022-23: $475,862. The contract includes a 2% increase for 2024-25, to $485,379.24; and a 3% increase for 2025-26, to $499,940.61. The parties may then negotiate an extension of up to two more years.

Salvaged boat removed from beach

The town recently demolished and removed a boat from the beach at Mackerel Cove. The boat sank to the bottom of the cove about a year ago, Harbor Master Paul Plummer told the selectmen June 24. The town had sought to have the boat removed by its owner ever since.

Collins vows to help rebuild Harpswell waterfront during visit

U.S. Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, vowed to help secure funding to rebuild Harpswell’s storm-damaged working waterfront during a visit to the town on Saturday, Jan. 20. Collins, who visited Henry Allen’s Seafood on Lookout Point and two other heavily damaged sites on Bailey Island, called the destruction “heartbreaking.”
