John Gilliam Day

I grew up in New England, but I’m a relative newcomer to year-round living in Maine. I have to say, when people spoke of mud season, I didn’t know what to expect. When everything is mucky, it’s hard to wait for the spring flowers to show up, but what does show up is all the trash that’s been thrown to the roadside over the winter!

I’m glad to have a neighborly way to participate in cleaning up the roadside during Harpswell’s John Gilliam Day. This fine Harpswell tradition of annually addressing roadside trash is also a good way to celebrate Earth Day.

John Gilliam cleanup day is the Saturday nearest Earth Day, which this year means April 23. I hope to see neighbors out again this year on April 23!
