Some sea farmers decry lengthy lease application process

Vienna resident Ben Weeks has been a lobsterman for 17 years and is hoping to start a sugar kelp farm in the New Meadows River in Harpswell to diversify his income. However, Weeks has been waiting almost three years for his lease applications to be approved by the Maine Department of Marine Resources.

Bailey Island Fishing Tournament sees strong turnout, but fewer tuna

Continuing a summer of slow fishing in Harpswell, the Bailey Island Fishing Tournament saw only four tunas caught this year, compared with 18 last summer. However, despite low tuna numbers, the Casco Bay Tuna Club’s 83rd annual tournament — revived last year following a pandemic-related hiatus — was a lively success.
