Visitors to Harpswell's George J. Mitchell Field will see a different landscape this year. On the waterfront at the town park, the administration building is down, and the remnants of the building will soon follow.

An Orr’s Island woman died Wednesday, Jan. 14, after being struck by a vehicle on Route 24 north of the island's fire station, according to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The Harpswell Select Board has approved a recommendation to have a contractor remove the concrete slab of the former administration building at George J. Mitchell Field, which was demolished in December.

After years of debate about what to do with a town-owned building at George J. Mitchell Field, demolition of the Cold War-era structure is underway. Residents voted to take down the long-vacant waterfront building, known as the administration building or Building 126, in June.
