Thank you, Harpswell

Thank you, Harpswell, for your very generous support of Chuhuiv, Ukraine. Your contributions totaling $25,691 enabled the war-torn city to buy four vehicles for transportation of its residents and those in surrounding villages to a “humanitarian hub” and will also be used by workers who are repairing buildings damaged by Russian bombings.

A special thanks to The School House 1913 for hosting the Ukraine fundraiser on May 10 and donating specially prepared Ukrainian dishes, beverages and the services of its staff to the more than 200 attendees. We also thank Carrot Signs for donating the yard signs publicizing the event, which were placed throughout Harpswell. And our heartfelt gratitude goes out to the many local volunteers who dedicated their time and energy to making the fundraiser a great success, from designing the flyers, to posting and handing them out, to greeters at the fundraiser, to those who collected donations.

“Thank you for all your efforts for us,” said Chuhuiv Mayor Galina Minayeva in a special Zoom call, with air raid sirens howling in the background. She wrote in a later email that two vehicles had been purchased in Poland and two more will be bought from the same source.

Jerry Klepner and Connie Sage Conner, Co-Chairs, Ukraine fundraiser

Preserving our lobstering heritage

When Maine's lobster industry looks back on 2022, we'll likely remember the challenges — high bait and fuel prices, low dock prices, shortages of marine supplies, and a complicated legal challenge that threatens to end the fishery as we know it.
