Another Cedar Beach

On Allen Point Road, there is a public, state-owned parcel of land with a small, pebbly beach and beautiful views. For many years, the owners of the properties surrounding this land have used it exclusively. They want to keep it that way.

The Town Lands Committee, following the town’s goal of giving more ocean access to the public, has worked hard on a plan to make it possible to manage that public land by having a trail and a four-car parking lot. This plan would enable those of us who live on the road but have no view or water access, along with others, to use that public land.

I want to remind those concerned that this is not some big Giant’s Stairs-type attraction that will draw huge crowds. It’s lovely, but not spectacular.

Sadly, those who have been using it exclusively are trying in every way they can to keep it for themselves. They sought out many people to sign a petition saying it is for environmental reasons. However, the state has informed the town that the committee’s plan will not be detrimental to the environment of Clark Cove. A small parking lot and trail will not be disruptive.

I live on Allen Point Road, but have no lovely ocean view, nor can I walk that far nor get through the brush to enjoy the little beach. It would be awesome to make a trail for all of us. It is public land!

The Select Board has put the committee’s plan on the town’s March ballot. Please vote to make this land accessible to all of us. Make it possible for those with less to be able to experience the beach and trail, as public land demands. Then, welcome to Allen Point Road. Come and enjoy when you can.
