The Merrymeeting Soccer Club’s U14 boys team capped an undefeated season by winning the Soccer Maine Fall Classic League state championship on Nov. 2. The team defeated the Windham Youth Soccer Association 3-1 in the title match at Kents Hill School in Readfield.
The team included five Harpswell players: Truxtun Neal, Max Piccone, Leif Svenson, Bryson Rioux, and Bryce Spiers. Coach Ryan O’Banyel said most members have been playing together for three or four years, giving them a deep understanding of each other’s style and how to support one another on the field.
“I could not be more excited for the boys and all the accomplishments that they reached this season,” O’Banyel said in an email.
The Merrymeeting boys U14 team, for boys 14 and under, finished the year with a perfect 15-0 record. The squad also won the Sanford Soccer Association’s 35th annual Pete Levasseur Fall Classic Soccer Tournament in October, playing five matches in three days.
“The boys played hard defense all season long, only giving up four goals the entire season,” O’Banyel said. “They were very organized and loved playing technical soccer while possessing the ball, passing the ball and creating multiple scoring opportunities on attack.”
