Consolidated completes 2nd phase of Harpswell fiber-optic expansion

Consolidated Communications has completed the second phase of its Fidium Fiber broadband expansion in Harpswell, bringing its high-speed internet service to an additional 2,700 homes and businesses.

The Illinois-based company said the expansion, coupled with an earlier one in 2023, has made Fidium service available to more than 20,000 addresses in Harpswell, Brunswick and Topsham.

“The recent expansion of Fidium Fiber in Harpswell ensures competition in options and costs, which is good for all customers in our community,” said Kristi Eiane, Harpswell’s town administrator, in a mid-August news release from Consolidated.

More than 270,000 Maine homes and businesses now have access to Fidium, with additional availability coming soon across the state, the release said. Residents and businesses can register to learn more and get updates about future service availability at fidiumfiber.com.

Fidium promises residential speeds of up to 2 gigabits per second, fast enough for several users to simultaneously stream high-definition video or participate in online gaming or videoconferencing.

It also offers a service tier for small businesses and entrepreneurs called Fidium@Work “with multi-gig speeds and additional robust business features to help businesses stay connected,” according to Consolidated.

The company said Fidium representatives would be visiting the community soon, taking part in local events and sharing more information about service options and availability.
