School board member seeking reelection

My name is Gregory Greenleaf, and I currently serve on the Maine School Administrative District 75 school board. I am seeking reelection in the upcoming March election.

The current board is made up of people who, like me, believe a school board must always demonstrate professionalism, competence, civility and thoughtfulness. We understand that the primary duty of a school board member is not to run the schools, but to see that they are well run.

In late 2023, the board entrusted the running of our schools to Dr. Heidi O’Leary, a Harpswell native. That the board has been able to retain a superintendent for several years reflects the positive climate my colleagues and I have worked to establish. Stable leadership is essential for student success.

During my tenure, I supported the new cellphone policy that bars cellphones during school. Student mental health is one of my top concerns and reducing screen time improves focus and reduces anxiety.

More recently, the board began a multiple-year study on how to address the significant needs of the district’s aging schools, such as Harpswell Community School. Because I was once PTO chair, I recognize how important it is to have an elementary school in our community. Thus, I hope to support a solution that allows the children of Harpswell to continue to sing the “Harpswell Song” in Harpswell.

Finally, I am especially proud to have helped craft the district’s vision statement as part of the new strategic plan: “We envision a community of learners with curious minds and kind hearts who are equipped with an excellent education and empowered to thrive in a diverse and changing world.”

I am confident that, working together, we will make wise decisions that empower the kindhearted children of MSAD 75 to “thrive in a diverse and changing world.”
