Two local school board seats and a Harpswell Select Board seat are up for election in March.
Select Board Chair Kevin Johnson is seeking reelection, as is Maine School Administrative District 75 school board member Gregory Greenleaf. The other Harpswell school board representative whose term is ending, William “Bart” Beattie, has decided not to run again.
According to Town Clerk Cathy Doughty, both Johnson and Greenleaf have already submitted their nomination papers with the required number of signatures. No one else had taken out papers as of mid-December, either to challenge Johnson or run for the school board seat held by Beattie.
Johnson has served on the Select Board for nearly 12 years, including roughly two-thirds of that time as chair. Greenleaf and Beattie are each serving their first three-year term, having been elected in March 2023.
Johnson said he is running for reelection to continue overseeing major projects such as a planned $6 million municipal fire and rescue station on Mountain Road, which voters approved in June.
Greenleaf said he is seeking another term to help maintain well-run public schools, drawing on 26 years of teaching experience and a focus on stable, collaborative board leadership. Beattie said he always intended to serve a single term, and that the school board and district administration are in good hands.
Doughty said nomination papers are available at the Town Clerk’s Office. Candidates must return papers with between 25 and 100 signatures of registered Harpswell voters by the close of business on Jan. 13.
The election will take place as part of Harpswell’s annual Town Meeting on March 14.
