Floats missing from Mackerel Cove

Between the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 11, and the morning of Monday, Oct. 13, two floats went missing from the beach at Mackerel Cove. They had been tied to a stout post next to the boat ramp, one behind the other, waiting to be picked up.

There is no evidence of the line on the post having parted. With a northwest wind, it would be hard for the floats to escape the cove, tied together, without hanging up on the numerous floats and boats between the beach and open ocean. That’s still possible, but this is a mystery we are trying to solve.

Everyone I’ve spoken to has been kind and helpful and equally amazed that two floats tied together could disappear without a trace. I want to thank everyone, especially the fishermen at Glen’s Lobsters, Bass Rock, Angie’s Lobster, and Garrison Cove, who have been on the lookout, and others who have reported loose and missing floats through Facebook.

I don’t want to give up hope that the floats can be recovered if everyone keeps looking and listening. If you hear or see anything, you can use the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office’s anonymous tip line: 207-774-1444 Ext. 2208. Reference incident number 25-031616.

Johnson poems back in print

I enjoyed reading Joann Gardner's article about Marjorie Johnson ("Marjorie Johnson: Bailey Island's favorite poet," November) and I'd like to add that her book, "Songs from an Island," is, at last, available in a reprint edition.
