The State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a fatal fire that broke out early Tuesday inside a house on Harpswell Neck.

Firefighters responded to 1501 Harpswell Neck Road around 4:30 a.m., according to a Maine Department of Public Safety news release. Crews arrived to find the single-family home ablaze, it said.

They worked to extinguish the house fire and located one person inside, who was removed from the building and pronounced dead at the scene. Officials tentatively identified the man as 78-year-old Hugh MacFarlane.

The state Chief Medical Examiner’s Office will investigate to determine the cause and manner of death, according to the release.

The fire did significant damage to the home, especially on the second floor. The cause remains under investigation.

Several agencies responded, including the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Harpswell Neck Fire and Rescue, the Cundy’s Harbor Volunteer Fire Department, the Orr’s and Bailey Islands Fire Department, and fire departments from Brunswick and West Bath.
