Brunswick conservationist Jym St. Pierre has been named the sixth recipient of the Brunswick Rotary Club’s annual Walter H. “Doc” Phillips Memorial Award, named for a late Harpswell volunteer.
The club presented the award Oct. 16 during a ceremony at the Harpswell Town Office. Town Administrator Kristi Eiane and the Harpswell Select Board hosted the event.
Doc Phillips, who died in 2019, was a Rotarian whose contributions to the community included service on the Harpswell Conservation Commission and with the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust. The Rotary Club established the award in 2020 to honor those who share his devotion to public service, environmental stewardship and local heritage.
St. Pierre, who lives in Brunswick, has spent nearly five decades protecting Maine’s natural landscapes. Since 1995, he has served as Maine director of Restore: The North Woods. He previously worked with the Sierra Club, The Wilderness Society, the Northern Forest Alliance, and the Maine Department of Conservation.
St. Pierre also helped found the Kennebec Land Trust and he chaired Maine Conservation Voters. He continues to serve on the Executive Committee of Friends of Baxter State Park, as well as the Brunswick Town Commons Committee.
The Phillips Award has honored one or more recipients each year since 2020. Past recipients are Linda Blanton, Mary Ann Nahf, Susan and Steve Weems, Gayle Hays, and Surrey and Hugh Hardcastle. The commemorative plaque bearing their names is on permanent display in the Harpswell Town Office lobby.
Correction: An earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Phillips’ widow and son attended the ceremony. The Anchor regrets the error.
