Library Connections: Settling in for autumn

The sign at the Cundy’s Harbor Library advertises a recent meeting of the third Thursday book club. Other regular events include author talks and technology support. (Photo courtesy Cundy’s Harbor Library)

As I look out to the New Meadows River, I see more empty moorings. Summer residents are leaving the harbor. Soon Cundy’s Harbor will return to the exclusive domain of the commercial fishing community. Now we are in the period when we turn from outdoor living to indoors. That wood I finished stacking will soon keep the chill at bay in the mornings and late afternoons.

At the library, the heat pumps will return to warm mode and the bookshelves will circulate new and well-loved books. The third Thursday book club will continue to bring light and laughter to its community, while the knitters will continue to follow their patterns and fill the building with conversation on Saturday afternoons. Life at Cundy’s Harbor Library is settling in for autumn.

As the seasons shift, we find readers shift their reading selections as well. As I fill requests for Harpswell, I have noticed that they’re choosing more academic books as lifelong learners audit classes at Bowdoin or take a course through Midcoast Senior College.

David, our librarian, continues to work with people who need help with technology or access to a printer. Don’t forget to come and learn about family genealogy. You can find resources online, with our Ancestry Pro Tools membership,  or schedule a time to learn from the Maine State Library’s genealogy experts.

As the autumn days modify our habits and activities, the library will remain open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. The outdoor sign will share our monthly events, such as author talks, book groups and technology time. If you like to knit or play cards or board games, let us know and we will post gatherings.

With readership on the rise, along with our number of card holders, the library is continually shelving new releases and periodicals to be sure we stay true to being “the little library with the big view” … and hospitality too. Let the temperatures fall, and when the walls seem to be closing in or you need to get away for a quiet interlude overlooking the harbor, Cundy’s Harbor Library will be here.

“Library Connections” is a monthly column that rotates among the three libraries that serve Harpswell: Cundy’s Harbor, Orr’s Island, and Curtis Memorial. Heather Logan is the director of the Cundy’s Harbor Library.

Ask the Anchor: Was there a tidal grist mill in Basin Cove?

Question from Ted Goulette: Being a part-time Harpswell resident, I have always been interested in Harpswell history. Our place is on Basin Cove, and from what I was told, there used to be a tidal grist mill at the entrance. I was wondering about the mill, where the grain came from, where the flour went, how long it was in operation, and when. Was there more than one? Why did it shut down?

It's March. Daylight saving time returns and the first day of spring is coming. The return of longer days and warmer weather is always welcome in Maine. One date I noticed on my calendar is March 9. It is National Crabmeat Day!
