Island Law: Time to leave early

I am Deputy George Bradbury. I work for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. I am a resident of Harpswell. I live and work among you.

Your monthly warning

The fine for following too closely is $152.

Leave time for slow drivers

Memorial Day has come and gone, which means cottages are opening up and Airbnbs are getting busy. The town comes alive this time of year, and with more traffic on the road, more emergencies can happen.

I want to thank Mike from Orr’s Island for this month’s topic. This is the time of year when we need to leave a little early because there might be someone in front of us driving under the speed limit because they’re looking at the scenic views.

Make sure you aren’t driving aggressively. This means don’t tailgate, don’t brake check, and leave some space between you and the car in front of you.

Recommendations and encouragements

If you own a rental property, I strongly recommend that you tell your guests to leave room for emergency vehicles.

I would encourage all to find a committee or group and give back some time!

June is the month for the Harpswell Recreation and Community Services Hiking Challenge! Headquarters is at the Town Office, so go check it out on June 7 and 8 and explore Harpswell!

Ask the Anchor: What are Harpswell’s rules for roadside signs?

Question from Garry Hansen: It's getting a bit out of hand here in Harpswell with signs nailed to poles or stuck in the ground. Approaching the Orr's and Bailey Islands Fire Department station, there were three in a row, and over the bridge many more. They seem to be everywhere. Should the town do something about this?

Thinking in Public: Can we talk?

These days, few things in my life can evoke that adrenaline-soaked "fight or flight" response that is common to most animals. As I age, the situations in which that might happen are fewer and fewer.
