Island Law: Summer road safety

“Island Law” columnist George Bradbury urges drivers to watch for motorcycles, including his own, as the weather warms. (George Bradbury photo)

I am Deputy George Bradbury. I work for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. I am a resident of Harpswell. I live and work among you.

Tire reminder

Remember to swap out your snow tires. The fine for driving with studded snow tires out of season is $152.

Happy Mother’s Day!

Well, friends, we are now onto the month of May, which means warmer weather, and this is the month to celebrate moms on Earth and up in heaven. I know I would not be where I am today if it wasn’t for my mother’s love and guidance. So to all the ladies out there, near and far, happy Mother’s Day!

Summer road safety

Warmer weather means road maintenance has begun. Please keep your eyes open for orange roadwork signs. Always remember that around any corner there could be a worker, a walker or a child.

Since winter is in our rearview mirror, on sunny days you might be thinking of riding your bike or motorcycle. Make sure you are wearing your brain bucket, aka helmet. Obey the rules of the road and have a good time. Car drivers, please keep an eye out for motorcycles! I will be on one of those motorcycles!

Walkers, if you decide to walk on Route 24 or 123, please make sure you are facing traffic. If you see a vehicle coming toward you, step off the road and maybe give a little wave as they drive by. For a safer place to walk and a good workout, there are always side roads. I like to go to Mitchell Field if it’s nice or the Brunswick Rec if it’s raining.

Remember, let’s be safe out there! And don’t get voted off the islands.

The views above are the views of Deputy George Bradbury, not of the town of Harpswell or the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office.
