Brunswick Landing entrance to close for guard shack removal

The “back gate” entrance to Brunswick Landing via Merriconeag Road will be closed the week of Nov. 4 while a contractor removes the former back sentry post, also known as the guard shack.

Starting Monday, Topsham-based Crooker Construction will begin removal of the guard shack, according to Jake Levesque, director of innovation and development at the Midcoast Regional Redevelopment Authority.

The authority manages Brunswick Landing, a mixed-use development consisting of homes and businesses on the 3,200-acre site formerly known as Naval Air Station Brunswick. The base was decommissioned in 2011.

“(Merriconeag Road) is expected to be closed for the week,” Levesque wrote in a post on Friday, Oct. 25, to the Redevelopment Authority’s website. “We will provide updates as they become available.”

The back gate is in Brunswick. Merriconeag Road branches off State Route 123 at an intersection that was converted to a four-way stop in late September, irritating some Harpswell residents.

Brunswick officials said the traffic pattern change was prompted by a high incidence of crashes at the intersection.
