Island Law: The costs of speeding

I am Deputy George Bradbury. I work for the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office. I am a resident of Harpswell. I live and work among you.

Fines for speeding

Maine’s traffic laws dictate fines for speeding as follows: 1-9 mph over limit, $114; 10-14 mph over limit, $129; 15-19 mph over limit, $170; 20-24 mph over limit, $230; 25-29 mph over limit, $278; imprudent speed, $134. Fines are higher in construction and school zones.

Going 30 mph over the limit or more is called criminal speeding, and the driver can be arrested. The fine for operating so slowly as to impede traffic is $152.

Pedestrians and walkers, please walk against or facing traffic. Whenever possible, wear reflective and bright clothing, even during the day.

A note to kayakers

Kayakers, please have a plan and a life jacket, and know your limitations and skill level. If it’s blowing a gale, do not go out. We had two water rescues in one week already this summer.

Suggestions

I have received several suggestions. Please keep them coming. But if you are experiencing an emergency, please call 911 or 800-501-1111.

If you would like to suggest items of interest to be discussed, please feel free to email me at bradbury@cumberlandcounty.org.

Remember, let’s be safe out there! And don’t get voted off the islands.
