June ballots include school spending, state primaries

Harpswell voters will decide two school spending issues and choose their preferred November election candidates for county, state and national seats at the polls on Tuesday, June 11.

Voters in the June referendums will choose whether to grant final approval to next year’s Maine School Administrative District 75 budget of $55 million, which garnered approval at a district budget meeting for voters on May 16.

Harpswell officials expect the town’s property tax rate to go up by 25 cents per $1,000 of valuation this year, from $6.10 to $6.35. The school budget would account for 16 of those 25 cents. MSAD 75 covers Harpswell, Topsham, Bowdoin and Bowdoinham.

Voters also will be asked whether to approve the issuance of up to $643,821 in no-interest bonds from a state fund for Region 10 Technical High School in Brunswick to finance the removal and replacement of a bridge structure outside the building.

In addition, Democrats, Republicans and Green Independent Party members will choose their candidates for U.S. senator, U.S. representative, state senator, state representative, and county register of probate.

The only contested primary is between two Republicans aiming to unseat eight-term U.S. Rep. Chellie Pingree, a Democrat. Andrew Piantidosi, of Cape Elizabeth, and Ronald Russell, of Kennebunkport, are on the Republican ballot. All other primary candidates are running unopposed.

The primary is “semi-open,” meaning that while party-affiliated voters can only vote in their own party’s primary, unaffiliated voters may choose any one primary to participate in.

The polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at the town’s sole voting location, Harpswell Community School.

Absentee ballots are available by request from the town of Harpswell with no need for an approved excuse until Thursday, June 6. For more information, go to harpswell.maine.gov.
