Town slashes fee for brush disposal

The town will temporarily slash the fee for brush disposal to provide relief for property owners as they continue to clean up from January’s storms.

The discount, from $175 to $100 per ton, will take effect Tuesday, April 23, and continue through May 18. Commercial waste haulers will continue to pay $175 per ton.

Harpswell Solid Waste Manager Charles “Chuck” Perow recommended the measure in an April 5 letter to the Harpswell Select Board.

“In light of the (townwide) damage caused by the recent slew of storms, it seems appropriate to try and provide some relief to taxpayers,” Perow said.

Brush must meet certain guidelines. Logs cannot measure more than 18 inches in circumference, and loads of brush may not include bags, demolition materials, stumps, or trash, according to Perow’s letter.

The Select Board approved the measure 3-0 on April 11.
