Great job on Hiking Challenge

I’d like to thank the folks at the Harpswell Heritage Land Trust and Harpswell Recreation for the great job they did running this year’s Harpswell Hiking Challenge. It was nice to see so many families out vying to complete the full eight-trail challenge or the modified four-trail challenge.

Thanks also to the volunteers who helped out with the event, especially those who gave up many hours of their weekend to hand out T-shirts and other cool swag. Also, kudos to Harrison Whittaker who, for his Eagle project, added a new trail at Little Ponds Preserve. It is amazing and adds a great new hike in Cundy’s Harbor.

My daughters and I did the eight-trail challenge in four hours with only minor mishaps along the journey. This year we only confronted one pack of unleashed dogs at Mitchell Field, so that was a blessing. Also, each of us fell down once, but those falls added comic relief to the hike and allowed us each a turn to say, “If we were in a zombie movie right now and zombies were chasing after us, we’d leave you behind.” Thanks again, and zombies or no zombies, we’ll see you on the trails in 2023.

Observations on the field

Recently, while walking Mitchell Field with my dog, I took an informal bird count. On the lower field, I chalked up a bobolink sighting right off the bat. These seasonal migrant birds are endangered and need the open meadows for raising their young.

Thank you to horse helpers

We'd like to extend a huge thank you to Animal Control Officer Jim Bebarski and all the law enforcement officers, friends and neighbors, some known to us and some not known, who helped round up our horses when they decided to make a break for it very early in the morning on March 5.

The art of our town

As I look out my window while cozy by the fire, I think about how quickly autumn passed and winter settled in. This time of year, Harpswell seems to take on a quieter and more subdued beauty.
