Thinking in Public: New discoveries

I always thought the age of discovery to be a reference to ancient times, but for me it's all about current events. I don't mean public events, like what passes for news on TV broadcasts, but important discoveries right in my own home.

Thinking in Public: On being quiet

About every 20 minutes or so growing up, my mother would tell me, "If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all." It's not likely that her mother had to tell her that, so I think she heard other moms use that old nugget on their kids and jumped on the wagon.

Thinking in Public: Anticipation

It's chilly, 24 degrees with a 20-mph northwest breeze. For dramatic effect, I'd tell you what the "wind chill" factor is, but you and I don't need any more drama. Just figure it's 24 degrees and blowy.

Thinking in Public: Can we talk?

These days, few things in my life can evoke that adrenaline-soaked "fight or flight" response that is common to most animals. As I age, the situations in which that might happen are fewer and fewer.

Thinking in Public: The smoker and the cough

More than 60 years ago, a 15-year-old neighbor taught me to smoke a cigarette. Thirty years later, I became a nonsmoker. Now, 30 years after that, I'm smoking again, but this time it's bovine protein getting blackened rather than my lungs.
