Susan Marie Radomski, 75, of Orr’s Island, Maine, died peacefully at home on McMaster Lane on April 12, 2025, shortly after being diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Born on Tuesday, March 28, 1950, in Neenah, Wisconsin, she was the first child of Joseph and Jubie Radomski. Susan’s childhood was influenced by attending 13 schools in 12 years because her father’s engineering career in the paper industry required frequent family moves.
She graduated from Bonny Eagle High School in Standish, Maine, in 1968. She then went to the University of New Hampshire, graduating in 1972 with a Bachelor of Science in occupational therapy. She also attended art college in Alabama, and many years later went to Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute, where she studied nutrition and dietetics.
Susan was known as a kind, generous, friendly, fun-loving woman. She inspired the iconic “Mermaid of Orr’s Island,” who makes her annual, illuminated appearance on Route 24 in December. One of her favorite places in the world was Key West, Florida.
Professionally, she worked as an occupational therapist for many years in various settings. She was active in multiple organizations. Her involvements included Jimmy Buffett’s Parrot Head Clubs, Newfoundland Dog Club of New England, Knit Wits of Orr’s Island, Harpswell Heritage Land Trust, Daughters of the American Revolution, and Maine Chapter of the Sierra Club.
Her touch was far-reaching. She was a driving force behind breast cancer awareness on a local level. Her generosity brought many together from Maine, Florida, Minnesota, Alabama and in between to meet and raise money for causes near and dear to her heart. She also supported ALS and Alzheimer’s organizations.
Susan enjoyed going to museums, getting her hands dirty while gardening, and creating beneficial habitats for birds and butterflies. She enjoyed music of all types, especially Jimmy Buffett’s Caribbean lifestyle, classical and folk.
She was predeceased by her parents. She is survived by her partner of 41 years, John Boomer, of Orr’s Island; and her brothers, Tom Radomski, of Kennebunk, Maine, and Steven Radomski, of North Bend, Washington, along with their families. Susan built many strong friendships locally and across the country.
In Susan’s own words, “I recognize that death is as much a reality as birth, growth, maturity and old age; it is the one certainty of life.” A joyous celebration of life will be held this summer in the spirit of “Keep the Party Going.” In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory, 1316 Duval St., Key West, FL 33040.
