Selectmen pick Warren for school board

The Harpswell Board of Selectmen has appointed Margaret “Greta” Warren to the Maine School Administrative District 75 Board of Directors, choosing her from among four candidates for a vacant seat.

Warren will replace Alison Hawkes, who resigned Jan. 19. Warren will serve through June 2023. She lives off Mountain Road and has two children who will soon start school. She works as operations director for the Maine Conservation Alliance and Maine Conservation Voters.

The vote on the appointment was 3-0.

Board of Selectmen Chair Kevin Johnson called the appointment a “tough” decision between “four really good people.”

“I personally went back and forth,” Johnson said during the meeting on Thursday, March 17. “I ended up with Greta Warren.”

“I did too, and I have to say, this was a very, very tough decision,” Selectman David Chipman said. “All of the candidates were most excellent.”

Selectman Jane Covey agreed. “I would vote for Greta and thank all four individuals who were interested in the position and hope that you will continue to be, as there’ll be open positions coming up in the future.”

Gregory Greenleaf, Heather Logan and Tyler Washburn were the other applicants.

“I’m honored to step into this role and I look forward to working with the rest of the MSAD 75 school board and serving the needs of our community,” Warren said after the vote.

Warren’s appointment makes two changes to Harpswell’s four school board seats in just five days. On March 12, Harpswell voters elected Ryan Larsen with 74.58% of the vote in a race with Washburn for a three-year term.

Larsen will replace Linda Hall, who opted not to run for reelection as she nears 12 years of service. Larsen will start his term in late June.
